Which pet do I really want?
When choosing a pet please ask yourself a few questions. (twelve week old african grey parrot) |
|
The first thing to consider is your life style. If you are allways out
with your friends or a workaholic who is never home please consider why
do I want a parrot? You may not have to exercise them but would you
keep something with so much intelligence locked in a cage all day? They
require love, affection and companionship as well as food and water.
They will need time for stimulation and play, not just for an hour
each day but almost all your time should be spent in the company of
your parrot. I bring my parrot in to the shop with me everyday and he
gets stimulation from all the customers and staff all the time. All
parrots can be tamed with time and love, but do you have the time to
take on a cheaper untamed bird? Would it be better to get a hand reared
bird even though it may cost three or four times the price? Remember
all these bird can live a very long time and will need care all their
life, what would happen to the bird if anything happened to change your
life style? Would you be better of with someting else? Please think carefully before purchasing any pet! |
" Mum I want a pet " must be a frightening sound for a parent. It needn't be. A pet can give a lot of love and teach a child responsibility. Wether it is a goldfish, snake, rabbit, bird or an insect they all have to be cared for and a child is more likely to care for a pet they have chosen for themselves. Think about where the pet is going to be kept, is it in the garden or in the house? If its in the house where can the home be housed safely? Is the pet suitable for the child? Is my child too young to be able to handle its pet properly? Most animals respond better if they are handled regulary and not left in their home all week. Time must be set aside each and every day for the pet to be played with so that they remain tame and playful. They need to be cleaned and groomed regulary so this teaches your child responsibility and respect for other creatures. Spending time with a pet can be very theraputic and relaxing for the modern child with so many distractions and might even get them out in to the fresh air instead of being stuck in front of the telly. |
Most people thinking of an indoor pet would think of a hamster but I would disagree. I think the best indoor pet is the pet rat! Don't faint, they are clean friendly , loyal, inteligent and if they are handled from an early age hardly ever bite. Rats were originally taken from the wild for animal experimentation and have been bred in captivity for over 250 years. They have little or no smell if cleaned out regulary. They will eat almost anything( they have a very sweet tooth). The will usually sleep during the night and play with you all day. Rats come in so many different colours. Come into the shop to see the rats being bred on site. Hooded, grey, reds, siamese, berkshire and rex are usually available. These really do make the best pet for any age of child fron 3 years upwards. |
